The plankton bar

2009/09/15 Lakar Iraizoz, Oihane - Elhuyar Zientzia

The plankton population suddenly grown in the Barents Sea during the summer, reached an area above all Greece, with a total area of approximately 136,000 square kilometers. This was collected by the Envisat satellite in mid-August.

Phytoplankton is a plant that lives in marine waters near the surface of the water, often microscopic, so it is not visible from satellites. Sometimes, however, the conditions of the medium are especially conducive to the growth of phytoplankton in a certain period of time, and bloom or blooms occur, that is, they suddenly multiply a lot and occupy surfaces like that of the image.
