Catalogue of all terrestrial species

2005/05/01 Elhuyar Zientzia Iturria: Elhuyar aldizkaria

In order to produce a catalogue of all species on Earth, scientists have proposed to create in London the ‘barcode’ of each species. When we say barcode, we say a short sequence of DNA that serves to identify living beings. It is said that the cytochrome I oxidase c mitochondrial gene is the most appropriate to use it as a barcode, since this gene participates in the metabolism of all living beings, but is encoded with a small difference in each of the species. The catalogue of all species of the Earth can allow us to expand our knowledge in the ecological and evolutionary field and, consequently, improve the management of the world that surrounds us.
