Shell rolled into four axes

2008/01/10 Lakar Iraizoz, Oihane - Elhuyar Zientzia

During the elaboration of the Malaysian shellfish catalogue, a snail shell was discovered that I had never discovered. He has been called opisthostoma vermiculum. The difference with the rest of the snail species is its shell rolled into four independent axes.

This has surprised researchers. They know about 100,000 species with the rolled shell and none resemble the new one. The shells of the snails that until now they knew were wrapped in a maximum of three axes.

When they first discovered it, they thought it would be a special being created by a mutation, but gradually they were discovering more and more and they saw that they are all equal.

They have not yet explained the discovery. They do not know how it is possible to form shells with this type of structures, nor if that aspect brings advantages to animals. And for this they have to find survivors and have not yet achieved it.
