Advancing quantum cryptography

A group of European physicists have managed to send a safe quantum key from one island to another. Specifically, laser-coded photons have been sent from the La Palma telescope to Tenerife at 144 km.

Although the result is spectacular, it is difficult and not practical at all, since the transmission is necessarily carried out from the telescope to the telescope and the transmitted information is very scarce.
