Spectacular photograph of Jupiter and its moons

The spectacular image of Jupiter and its moons Io and Ganymede has been the winner of the grand prize of the photographic competition Astronomy Photographer of the year 2011, organized by Royal Observatory.

This is a photograph taken by amateur photographer Damian Peach from Barbados, where atmospheric luminosity offers the possibility to take astronomical images with an unbeatable precision. The jury highlighted the precision of the two moons of Jupiter.

This contest is starring photographs of stars, planets, galaxies, etc. and for the third consecutive year spectacular photographs have been collected.
