This morning, at the Faculty of Economics and Science of the UPV/EHU in Bilbao, the youth magazine Irrika was presented, created on the initiative of the University of the Basque Country. It will disseminate among the young subjects of science, technology and social sciences, with the aim of arousing curiosity, fondness and the vocation for knowledge and research. The magazine is composed of contents in Basque, Spanish and English and this year three issues will be published: spring, autumn and winter.
Although this journal has been created on the initiative of the University of the Basque Country, the responsibility of elaborating the contents has been of the Elhuyar Foundation, and has the collaboration of the Provincial Councils of Gipuzkoa, Bizkaia and Araba and the Department of Education of the Basque Government.
As for the design, the magazine has a small format, with capacity to house the folder (19,5x19,5 cm) and is formed by 40 pages. It is equipped with images of vivid and current colors. On two supports. On the one hand, the paper magazine that will receive free Basque students and on the other, online on the web http://www.irrika.net. The magazine will have a print of 66,000 copies.
Number zero
In his first issue, Irrika has opened the box of ideas, emotions, of what we are, that is, of the brain. Open the door and enter the brain house to see how it is built. And he has also collected the work done by Basque researchers with this great house: frauds with fruit juices, the value of insects to solve crimes, the differences between youth and adult debates...
Then it goes to the street to know the geological Bilbao. It detects that the street is full of fossils and proposes a special tourist visit. In addition, on the street he has also had the opportunity to inform himself and has known that cocoa liqueur is older than expected, that 42% of the songs that young people hear mention drugs, that we are on the threshold of electronic tattoos, etc. In addition, some myths have been broken. Gossip about prestigious scientists has shown him that not everything is gold, and they even fail in half.
And, of course, he has met people of interest: Eñaut Elorrieta, singer and physicist of Kez Zazpi; Gala Moreno, long-time researcher in the Indian Sea; and Ainhoa Jimenez, a recently returned student from Nicaragua. He has more themes, but he hasn't wanted to tell us all now. A secret: it has been excited and hot. The rest, ourselves. This is Irrika!
