New catalyst for hydrogen extraction

2003/10/01 Elhuyar Zientzia Iturria: Elhuyar aldizkaria

Although hydrogen is expected to be the fuel of the future, at the moment it is too expensive to get it polluting little. A nickel alloy catalyst can help overcome this obstacle.

90% Raney nickel and the rest of catalyst, a little aluminum and a little tin, is able to extract hydrogen from biomass in hot water and has an efficiency similar to that of expensive catalysts containing platinum.

The research has been conducted at the University of Wisconsin and after testing more than 300 catalysts have discovered this alloy that effectively channels the reaction.
