2010/11/10 Carton Virto, Eider - Elhuyar Zientzia

Things of birds. The pen is the title of the video winner of the video contest On Zientzia, and the author Daniel Morcillo Garrido. The awards ceremony took place yesterday in Chillida Leku, and the room was filled to watch the award-winning videos.

In the background, the members of the jury of the Science Contest: Alberto Gorritiberea, Onintze Salazar, Beñar Kortabarria, Marian Iriarte and Enrique Zarate. And above all, winners and representatives of the organization: Sergio Rodríguez, Nerea Blanco, Pedro Miguel Etxenike (DIPC), Igaratza Fraile (replacing Iñigo Onandia), Itziar Nogeras (Elhuyar Foundation), Daniel Morcillo and Wiwat Nuansing.

He was excited about the Daniel Morcillo award and the applause he received. Biologist and II. Morcillo is a teacher of education and thanked the organizers, Elhuyar and DIPC, "that the fans could participate in a contest of these characteristics".

Morcillo, through beautiful images, shows in video the value of Lume with examples that "hook" the viewer. Some probably unknown to many viewers. This is the feature highlighted by the jury of the video contest On Zientzia: "This work has been able to tell new things from a seemingly normal object. The strength and quality of the story engage the viewer with a 'sober' pen. Morcilla has received a prize of 3,000 euros for this work.

In addition to the grand prize, three others were distributed yesterday. The second prize went to Nerea Blanco and Sergio Rodríguez for their video Doppler Effect and radar. According to the jury, with few resources and imagination, this is a well-drawn video, very related to everyday life. Remember whenever we pass by a radar. "Compared to large technology centers, we thought we had no choice. But we played," Rodriguez said.

The third prize responds literally to the motto of the series of events that has included the contest On Zientzia: Passion for Knowledge . In fact, this is the main feature highlighted by the jury and the reason for the award: the video and passion for science shown by the authors. For this reason, and for the originality of the video, Wiwat Nuansing's Science on the way has received the third prize. Nuansing is a researcher at CIC nanogune, originally from Thailand, who after receiving the award spoke of: "I want to thank DIPC, which has allowed me to know that San Sebastian is really a scientific city."

These are the three main prizes of the contest, but the jury of the contest On Zientzia has made a special mention to the video presented by the researcher of Azti-Tecnalia, Iñigo Onandia. Fishing in science is the title of the video and with this special mention the jury wanted to reward the capacity and outreach effort of research centers. Onandia works these days in the sea of Norway and could not receive the prize live, instead his companion reminded the fishermen "because they take us to their boat. Without them this video would be impossible."

Numerous and diverse participation

The jury of the video contest On Zientzia has been composed of five people: Enrique Zarate, responsible for the activities of the City of Passion for Knowledge; Marian Iriarte, director of foreign relations of the Campus of Gipuzkoa of the UPV; Alberto Gorritiberea, director of cinema; Onintze Salazar, physicist of Euskalmet; and Beñar Kortabarria, director of the television program Teknopolis.

They have had a lot of work to choose the winners. In fact, there have been many videos that have been presented to the contest and the topics, approaches and participants have been varied: students, teachers, researchers of technological centers, professionals of the audiovisual sector...

In total, 50 videos have participated in the On Zientzia Competition, of which 37 have arrived from Euskal Herria, 8 from Catalan Countries, 2 from Berlin and 1 from Cambridge, Seville and Tenerife. As for the language, 10 videos have been received in Basque, 35 in Spanish, 4 in English and one in three languages.

Yesterday the organizers were as satisfied as the winners. The Elhuyar Foundation and the representatives of the Donostia International Physics Center expressed their desire to hold a second edition in the face of the success of a contest that they did not know very well how their reception would be.
