Fluorescent genes in the eyes

2005/07/22 Roa Zubia, Guillermo - Elhuyar Zientzia

The image shows the eyes of a fly. To make the photo, scientists have added a gene to the fly Drosophila. The gene encodes a fluorescent protein and when it is expressed in the cells of the eyes the effect seen in the image is obtained.

This and many other images can be seen in the exhibition of the Biomedical Image Awards 2005. The exhibition, located in the Wellcome Trust centre in London, brings together the best images this year in the field of biomedicine.
