Surface physics by Etxenike

2000/05/27 Roa Zubia, Guillermo - Elhuyar Zientzia

The scientific journal Science published yesterday a study on surface physics by Pedro Miguel Etxenike and his colleagues. The work published in the journal Science has been done with two German research centers, the II of Aachen. Physikalisches Institut uno and the Institut fur Ezperimentelle und Angewandte Physik in Kiel. Main article signature R. Aachen Berndt belongs to the researcher. In addition to Etxenike, foreign physicists working in Donostia participated in the development of this project.

The journal ‘Science’ publishes the results of the research of the Basque scientist

Research is of great importance in basic science. In fact, surface processes are common in physics and have characteristics that depend on the electronic structure of surfaces. The electronic surface structure has long been focused on science, as it is an interaction between a two-dimensional topology system and a three-dimensional system. The issue has been that there has been a notable disagreement in some published data on this subject between theoretical calculations and experimental results. The life span of these electronic situations could not be determined. Now, in the end, theoretical calculations and experiments agree.

Working in all areas

This work has been tackled both theoretically and experimentally. In the theoretical aspect, the team of Pedro Miguel Etxenike has extensive experience. Analyzes excited electronic states on the surface, cuasiparts, and interactions between these quasiparticles. The experimental aspect has been worked through the effective tunnel microscope. The most serious problem of experiments is that impurities occur on the surfaces analyzed. Therefore, the electronic structure can change a lot. Experimental materials are noble metals.

Important scientific journal ‘Science’

In the same way, these results can serve to understand other physical concepts, mostly related to theoretical physics. For example, it can bring new ideas to understand superconductivity. Also for the development of nanotechnology is a discovery that brings many new interesting concepts.

The team of the Navarrese scientist Pedro Miguel Etxenike can start this work with the collaboration that can now be provided by the Donosti International Physics Center. They are results of many years of research. However, its publication in a journal like Science will certainly be a great boost for the team. In fact, Science is one of the most prestigious scientific journals worldwide and the appearance of its results is a sign of the recognition of high scientific quality.
