In France, the project called ELSA (Investigation of the Limits of the Avalanche Zones) has been developed to prevent accidents that occur every year due to winter avalanches. Using an expert system, based on climate and environmental data (topography, slope, vegetation, snow height, etc.) is calculated in advance where, when and to what intensity the avalanche will occur. This system is expected to prevent many accidents and damage.
