Researchers at Columbia University in New York have concluded that the elephants of Borneo are different from the rest of Asia. In fact, they have less skull and different fillings.
A total of twenty elephants from Borneo have been selected for their studies and compared them to another one hundred elephants from South Asia. They have analyzed the blood and excrement of all and have been able to analyze different genes. The results indicate that Borneo elephants are genetically very different, so researchers can name them as subspecies. According to scientists, this breed of elephants arrived in Borneo 300,000 years ago and since then it has not moved. The main danger is that this population is about to disappear.
