Tropical Storm Causes a Hole in Guatemala

The image above reflects the serious damage caused in recent days by the tropical storm of Agatha. In the center of Guatemala City a hole has been created 60 meters deep and 40 meters in diameter. It seems to be due to karst erosion. It has swallowed a three-story building and other houses.

Interestingly, in 2007 a similar large hole was created in another area of the same city. According to geologists, both are due to karst erosion. Underground currents pierce the limestone so it is possible to easily demolish a terrain.
