“Because we are capable of doing it, must we do it? In my opinion, no.”

What happened to Unai García López is difficult to happen again. On Science has attended the short video contest. This competition, organized by Elhuyar and DIPC as part of the Teknopolis television program, aims to produce and disseminate short and original films on science and technology aimed at a wide audience.
Well, five years ago, Garcia, with other friends, presented the video in the portal Deepfake: The Future to the contest, which won the award for the best informative video. However, another work in the same category was also awarded, so they were awarded ex aequo. This year, she has performed solo and won the grand prize with the video The Future Today. And, once again, ex aequo.
García is also surprised by what happened and considers it a curiosity. There is another coincidence, but this is not so surprising: both works revolve around artificial intelligence. In fact, in 2020 it was already evident that artificial intelligence tools would have a rapid development and provide great opportunities. Garcia was in high school at the time and, realizing that the opportunities also involve risk, made a video about deep fraud together with his friends. They entered the competition and won.
“Making the video for the competition allowed me to combine my two hobbies: technical and creative. In reality, I’m interested in artificial intelligence as a tool, because creativity has more strength in me than the love for technology,” explains Garcia. Proof of this is the path he is taking in music: “Here at Andoain, I spent ten years studying guitar at the School of Music. I dropped out when I started college because I was short and I continued on my own, both for myself and for others, like my team, Nunk.”
The way to cultivate creativity
He says he saw the “boom” of artificial intelligence coming and decided to focus his studies on it, hoping it would be useful for him to cultivate creativity. “I am not a model student,” he admits, “but I have enjoyed my studies. Because through artificial intelligence, you can realize what you have in mind. Now, in my end-of-degree work, I want to develop a tool that facilitates the process of music production.” Then you also see the possibility of launching this development as a product.
But, like five years ago, the risks go hand in hand with the opportunities, and this has been clearly expressed in the last video that has won the OnCiencia competition. He calls the excessive craving triggered by artificial intelligence a “technological fascination” and warns that the damage may outweigh the benefits due to misuse.
“The example of a knife is often set: it can be used as good for harm. In the case of these instruments, due to their extremely high capacity, the damage they can cause is also very high. However, it’s not just about power,” he says. “In fact, they have developed very quickly and society has not had time to reflect.”
According to him, technology has given us a great capacity: “Any user is capable of anything. But because we're capable, do we have to? I don’t think it can be done, but we shouldn’t. The truth is that when I talk about this topic, I talk much more about the social aspect than the technological one.” He did so in the winning video.
At the end of his degree, he knows that he will have a job in the world of artificial intelligence, but for now, he prefers to try the path of music and audiovisuals, although he knows that it is much more difficult to get a livelihood out of it. Thus, he is about to do a master’s degree in animation, at the University of La Rioja, online. “Maybe I can do something to pull the two sides together,” he said. He has training and enthusiasm and looks with hope to the future.
