Researchers at Columbia University in New York have concluded that the elephants of Borneo are different from the rest of Asia. In fact, they have less skull and different fillings.
The researchers have selected twenty Borneo elephants that have compared with another one hundred from South Asia. They have analyzed the blood and excrement of all and have been able to analyze different genes. The results show that Borneo elephants are genetically very different and researchers may name them subspecies. According to scientists, this breed of elephants arrived in Borneo 300,000 years ago.
