Electronic animal identification

The ROBOTIKER technology centre has developed the electronic identification system for cattle and sheep in the Basque Country TRANSPONDER (TRANSmiter and resPONDER). TRANSPONDER is surrounded by biocompatible materials that animals ingest mixed with food. The system will remain in the rumor (one of the stomachs of the animals) and, by radio waves, each animal will issue the corresponding identification code.
For the moment, the TRANSPONDER system has been applied to 300 sheep from a rural house in Alava, but soon the inventors hope to extend it to all Euskal Herria, since within two years it will be essential to electronic identification of livestock in Europe.
