Unlike conventional engines, gasoline and air are injected separately into the cylinder in the Carisma 1.800 vehicle, allowing better combustion control.

The Japanese house Mitsubishi has prepared a new direct injection engine (GDI). Fuel consumption is 25% lower and engine power is 10% higher. Unlike conventional engines, gasoline and air are injected separately into the cylinder, so combustion is better controlled in the GDI engine.

The cars that carry this engine only work for the moment in Japan, but it is expected that the Charisma 1,800 gasoline cars from Mitsubishi will also arrive in Europe at the end of 1997.
