CERN has approved initiating the first phase of the project "LHC Computing Grid". In motion a computer network a thousand times more powerful than the current one.
In 2006, the LHC particle accelerator will begin to work and physicists will have to analyze more data than ever: 10 million Gigabytes Gigabytes or 20 million CD-ROM annually. To do this, it will be essential to have powerful computer tools.
The project "LHC Computing Grid" is born to respond to these needs. Through Grid, nearly 10,000 researchers and hundreds of universities around the world will be able to network. Grid technology will leverage the capacity of thousands of computers to distribute and record data. Instead of a computer doing all the work, many computers will make small fragments of work and then the results will be joined.
The project will be developed in two phases. The first phase will begin in 2002 and will continue until 2004. During these first three years, the right technology will be built and tested. Subsequently, between 2005 and 2007 the latest version of the network will be built.
