618 young people participated this year in Elhuyar STEAM workshops and conferences

Elhuyar held workshops and conferences on science and technology in 2023 with the aim of awakening young people’s interest in science and technology. A total of 26 actions have been carried out, involving 618 young people. These workshops and conferences have been developed in leisure centers, schools and universities, and, together with the development of the scientific and technological culture of young people, have aimed to promote the use of Euskera.

Elhuyar’s STEAM workshops have been held in Vitoria-Gasteiz, Barrundia, Tolosa and Arrigorriaga, all in leisure spaces. A total of 139 youth from 7 to 15 years of age participated, 44 per cent of whom were girls. These workshops have allowed the development of science and technology content in their free time. This is of great importance, as research shows that young people who participate in scientific and technological activities in free time will have a greater predisposition to choose in future studies in these areas. Through games and experiments, they have worked on topics as varied as chemistry, physics, mathematics, cooking, anatomy, engineering, astronomy… In addition, all the workshops have been women, to break the existing stereotypes with the professionals of science and technology and bring the real references to young people closer.

The conferences on critical thinking were held at the Goierri College of Ordizia and at the headquarters of Bilbao, Irún and Oñati of Mondragon Unibertsitatea. A total of 479 young people between the ages of 16 and 20 participated, of whom 55% were girls. These talks have worked on the false information that comes to us and the dynamics to identify negative attitudes.

More STEAM workshops and conferences in 2024

Coinciding with the arrival of the new year, Elhuyar will offer more STEAM workshops and conferences. In total, it has developed a catalogue of more than 20 workshops for young people and adolescents over 6 years of age, which will be held in leisure spaces. In addition to the Houses of Culture, Gaztegunes and Libraries, they can also be celebrated at the festivities.

• In the scientific gyn for children and adolescents, the participants should seek clues for the people. In addition, for boys and girls over the age of 12, there is a mobile ginkana.
• The scientific adventure “The Return of the Dinosaurs” is an escape room for young people aged 6 to 10 years. They'll have to do some scientific experiments to get to the end of the game and discover the secret that's in the box.
• Furthermore, there are STEAM thematic workshops, one or more sessions, to work on specific topics: Cooking Science, STEAM Challenge, Viscous experiments, Cryptography and secret codes, Criminology, Chemistry, Engineering, Anatomy, Playing with light…
