Global warming could cool Europe

2005/12/05 Roa Zubia, Guillermo - Elhuyar Zientzia

Paradoxically, scientists have long announced that European climate cooling can be a consequence of global warming. Now American scientists have published the results of the 2004 measurements and remarked the

idea. The Gulf Stream sends hot water from the Caribbean Sea to Europe and Africa and the current from the European coast to the north cools slowly. In the area of Iceland, it soon cools, sinks and heads south of the US coast. Consequently, in the Florida area there is hot water high up the sea and cold water deep down. But

this cycle is breaking with global warming. There will be less salt in the ocean. Lower salinity reduces the density of water and increases the difficulties to sink. In the end it is possible that the cycle weakens and the current gets colder to Europe. It is not entirely clear whether this is going to happen, nor how a phenomenon of this type will influence the European climate, but scientists believe that the average temperature in Europe can

be reduced between four and six degrees. It is a large number for the average.
