Catch the electrons, one by one

The STM microscope allows physicists to manipulate not only atoms, but also electrons individually. This means that a given atom can become an ion through this technique.

An example of this is shown in the figure. Two golden atoms are seen. The one on the right is neutral, that is to say, there is no electrons, while the one on the left has an “additional” electron, so it is charged negatively.
