Remembering Dolly, ten years later

2007/02/26 Rementeria Argote, Nagore - Elhuyar Zientziaren Komunikazioa

Ten years ago they announced the birth of the sheep Dolly. He was born in July 1996, but was not released until February 27, 1997: The article was published in the journal Nature and on the cover appears the image of the lamb Dolly.

The revolt created by that news was huge. In fact, it was the first time that cloning was successfully performed from the cells of an adult mammal. Many thought that if this could be followed, human cloning could be achieved from one day to the next, and that is why most countries drafted contrary laws.

It seems that the risk of human cloning was not for so much. Ten years later, it has not yet been possible to clone to man, which we know. However, more than one has claimed the merit of this feat for himself, remember the fraud of Korean Hwang Woo-Suk.

However, at present the great ethical debate is not human cloning itself or not. The issue has not been clarified, but the debate has evolved and the oral pleitos are of therapeutic cloning and cellularity.
